Nursing Agencies

For the past few days, Carina and I have been roaming around the metro looking for the best agency employing Filipino nurses to the United States. All in all, we've seen about 6 or 7 companies deploying Filipino nurses from the industrious state of New York to the sunny side of California. So many options yet so little time. Haaay. :)

Generally, most recruitment agencies would require any applicant the following qualifications and supporting documents:

  • A registered nurse in the Philippines

  • With at least 6 months to 2 years of tertiary hospital experience or 4 months or more volunteer hospital work

  • A Certificate of employment

  • Have passed the NCLEX-RN examination and/or CGFNS test

  • Have passed the IELTS exam, TOEFL-iBT, or TOEFL with TSE

  • Comprehensive and updated Resume

  • Birth Certificate

  • Passport

  • PRC License

  • PRC Certificate

  • PRC Board Rating

  • NBI Clearance

  • High school and College Diploma

  • Transcript of Records with RLE breakdown

  • Marriage certificate, if any

Of course, I posses all of these items except the 2nd one, which is actually the most essential of them all. Bummer. Due to my mother's perkiness, I have decided to finish all the tests necessary for my future US employment. That includes the NCLEX-RN (which I passed) and the IELTS exam (results TBA). I did, of course, submit my resume to major hospitals all over the metro, such as the Philippine Heart Center (I'm on the 1st priority list), UST Hospital (I'm included in the list of next trainees), and even the AFP Nursing Corps. (I'm doing the physical exam thing). Busy me, right?

Of all the recruitment companies that we (Carina and I) have sought, the one deploying nurses to New York really stands out (do I hear Broadway?). They have a reasonable salary offer, accommodating staff, most of my classmates are there, and they'll even help with your family's visa application. Plus the fact that they can deploy you to the oldest and possibly the best hospital in the US! Very nice, indeed. Haha.

Unfortunately, the said agency is quite pricey. I need roughly $1200 to process my New York License, Credentials Verification Service for the state of New York, and Visa Screen. And that's all on me! Yikes! Luckily, they'll reimburse them once I reach the States. Haha. :)

My parents think that it is a nice agency. Considering both sides of the coin, they told me that I should start processing the necessary requirements ASAP and land a job in any of the aforementioned hospitals. GRRR!

A word of caution, though, to all Filipino nurses.

  • Please VERIFY any agency with the POEA before signing anything. I remember a certain case some time last year when a group of Filipino nurses were "supposedly" sent to New York but were deported immediately due to immigration issues concerning their employer. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

  • Legitimate agencies would NEVER ask for a placement fee or any form of money. Usually, the company would provide that for you.

  • READ all forms given to you before signing anything. It is better to be informed than to be ignorant, right?

  • ASK every possible question that comes into your mind or forever keep your peace. Question them about work scenarios, wages, housing, vacation benefits, and the like.

  • NOTE any inconsistencies in their offers or contract and POINT them out. It is better to be a smart a** than be smart a**-ed (Is there such a word?).

Anyways, happy job hunting and God Bless! :)

Enriching Vocabulary

I found these words pretty much interesting not only because of their use and meaning, but also to the fact that all of them were taken from the 1980 BBC rendition of "Pride and Prejudice." Hope you'd find them useful in your daily conversations.

  • Ardently - warmth of feeling / passionately

  • Avarice - insatiable desire for wealth or gain

  • Caprice - sudden, impulsive, and unseemingly unmotivated action or decision

  • Frivolous - of little weight or importance

  • Hackneyed - lacking in freshness or importance

  • Whimsical - sudden idea or turn of mind

  • Officious - volunteering one's services where they are neither asked nor needed

Thank you.

Excelente Ensaïmada

I went to a workshop conducted by the British Council last Tuesday at the Richmonde Hotel along San Miguel Avenue in Pasig City. Of course, the workshop was amazing. The speaker, though I can't recall her name, taught us some strategies to ace the IELTS exam this Saturday. Obviously, I need to focus on my writing skills to pass the test. God bless, Paulo.

Anyways, we were served with snacks, a full-course meal and bottomless coffee. Yum. Yum. Yum. I was then intrigued with the last snack, which were a pair of ensaymadas.

Ensaymada

Sorry. I ate some of it before I took this picture. My bad.

Ensaymada Part 2

Diet? No way! This is so tasty!

So, my curiosity led my to Google the ensaymada's history. According to one site, it originated in Majorca, the largest island of Spain, during the 17th century. It was made of strong flour, pork lard, mother dough, sugar, water, and eggs. The said pastry was common during festivities and celebrations throughout the island. Here in the Philippines, the "Ensaïmada" evolved to "Ensaymada," made with butter (instead of lard), cheese toppings and sugar. Tasty! This can be associated with the fact that the Philippine islands were colonized by the Spaniards for 333 years (if my memory's still intact).

You should try one. It's very nice and tasty. Diabetes? No way! Haha.

Starstruck

Went to see the UAAP Women's Volleyball at the Blue Eagle Gym today. Obviously, I was with my little sister, Ella. UST was up against DLSU for the 1st game then UP vs. AdU for the 2nd game. I was bored, as usual. Haha.

UST had a rough start during the 1st set. The floor defense was, obviously, poor. The attacks from the attackers (Balse, Bernal, and Tabaquero) were easily read by the Lady Archers. Offensively, the team did fairly. They managed to bag some points (17, I think) from Balse's center attacks and Bernal's cross-court hits. Nice, Nice.

On the other hand, the Lady Archers were so good. Their combination attacks were astounding plus their floor defense was flawless, thanks to their libero. Llaguno was, as expected, the veteran of the team. She managed to read some of Balse's center spikes and stepped up for Taft-based Archers.

But, as expected, the Espana-based spikers clawed the Lady Archers with a four-setter. UST managed to bag the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th set with some hard-hitting attacks from Venus Bernal and the ever effective Mary Jean Balse. The Lady Tigers polished their floor defense and the blocking department was so nice. The 2nd set was the longest deuce I've ever seen sa UAAP. I wasn't even blinking! Seriously!

Of course, I had to take some pictures. Haha.

My sister, Ella, and Mary Jean Balse.

Me and Angelique Tabquero.

Me and the Other UST Players.

Me and Venus Bernal.

Me and Mary Jean Balse.

Starstruck. Yes, that's the most appropriate word that would describe my actions during the pictorial (or so to speak). They're amazing players. Up until now, I'm still speechless. Seriously speechless. ARGHH!

Anyways, kudos to the UST Lady Spikers for defeating the Lady Archers. You guys are the best! Haha. Good luck and God Bless on the FEU game!

      To Listen

There comes a time in every persons life wherein no one's there to listen. In short, you're all alone without anyone to listen to your trivial "KABABAWANS" and emotional outbursts. Thankfully, God is always there; waiting for us to make the first move. Even repetitive sentences or even grammatical errors are, somehow, irrelevant.

      Birthday Bash

As expected, I turned 22 yesterday, January 4, 2008. I wanted to post something special or extravagant about the said occasion but, to my demise, the thoughts simply drifted off to an unknown hemisphere in my brain. I seriously don't know when they plan to return or something. Argh!

Last Thursday, the 3rd of January, my mom decided to celebrate my birthday with a "BANG". She told me that she'll be preparing a little gathering for our relatives on the 5th (today) in commemoration of my NCLEX-RN exam results, plus my 22nd birthday. "Wow!", I thought to myself. I was taken aback from my mother's festive spirit due to the fact that it was clearly contradictory to what I was planning. "Good luck," I said to myself. This would be something I'd like to see.

When I was a little younger (around 6 or 7), my parents would ALWAYS throw a birthday party for me. My mom never failed to cook pasta, chicken, pastries, and, of course, the inevitable birthday cake. There were visitors, family friends, relatives, schoolmates, and neighbors inside our house wishing something good for me, with a little present on the side, of course. Yet, as each year passes, the said party spirit turned into an ordinary day: no pasta, no chicken, no pastries, no birthday cakes and no visitors. Ergo, no more birthdays for you, kiddo!

With that in mind, I developed this idea that there's nothing special about my birthday; that it was just an ordinary day in my life and that no one even bothers to think about it. Not to mention that its just 10 days after Christmas and 3 days after the New year. I even remember my mom's tag line when I asked her before about my birthday which goes someting like "We'll just celebrate your birthday with the holidays. Its just a couple of days early, right?"

      "Great!", I thought to myself.

I have nothing against celebrations or festivities, honestly. I want to see my cousins, talk to my aunts, argue about politics with my grandparents, herd my younger cousins to safety, and serve tons of food to my other relatives. Its just that I wanted something small, peaceful, and relaxing, to which my mom bolted as something "UNGRATEFUL."

But, come to think of it, why do I need to throw this party?

Yes, I do need to throw this little birthday bash for my relatives. They deserve this more than I do. They have been supporting me, in kind and in spirit, in all of my adventures and endeavors. They kept on encouraging me in times when I felt like I was the world's biggest failure. They've given me happiness of an unknown level during times of distress and made me laugh with their weird yet cool antics when I felt blue/depressed. These same people were there in all the 22 years of my life, whether it be god or bad. Yes, the house was a mess when they all left. Yet, when they bid farewell till our next family gathering, they never failed to leave marks of unending love in me that I consider as something priceless.

Thank you, Lord, for these wonderful people.
