La Vie en Rose

LA Vie En Rose

"Non, rien de rien/Non, je ne regrette rien/Ni le bien, qu'on m'a fait, ni le mal/Tout ça m'est bien égal" (No, nothing really/No, I have no regrets/Neither the good done to me, nor the bad/to me, they're all the same.) - Edith Piaf, La Vie en Rose

As always, boredom took hold of me, again, after an exhausting day. Went to the British Council Office yesterday morning to have my results forwarded to the CGFNS office in line with my Visa Screen application. After which, I took the liberty of looking around for something that would literally kill my profound boredom. So, as always, I sought the refuge of watching the very moving and inspiring movie, "La Vie en Rose." Seriously, you have to watch this amazing movie. Seriously.

Edith Piaf (or Édith Giovanna Gassion), portrayed by French actress and Academy Award Winner, Marion Cottilard, was admired as one of greatest French singers over the last century. Dubbed as the country's best pop singer, her emotional songs clearly reflected her tragic life. Some of her well-known songs include "La vie en rose" (1946), "Hymne à l'amour" (1949), "Milord" (1959), "Non, je ne regrette rien" (1960).

The entire film runs in a non-linear/flashback manner, usually jumping from her humble childhood beginnings in Belleville, France to international stardom in New York, which may either confuse or even irritate a number of people. I actually got a bit perplexed during the early parts of the film but, luckily, I got the hang of it midway. Anyways, I was a bit shocked to learn how she was seriously raised in a borthel by a group of prostitutes. Allegedly, she was blind, or so to speak, for a couple of years due to keratitis, which brought her into the devotion with Saint Therese, thanks to her prostitute nanny, Titine (Emmanuelle Seigner).

La Vie en Rose

Her road to stardom began when she met Louis Leplée (Gérard Depardieu), owner of Le Gerny, while singing for pennies in the streets with Mômone (Sylvie Estud), her confidant. Her remarkable voice captivated the hearts of the upper class which resulted in concerts and tours all over France, even New York. Here she met the married boxer Marcel Cerdan (Emmanuelle Seigner), the so-called love of her life. Their fist date at a diner was so funny: A world-class singer and a famous boxer dinning at a stereo-typical American diner for a first date?! Wow. Talk about cheesy. Haha. :) Anyways, the intense love affair came to an end when Marcel died from a plane crash. This incident drove Piaf to depression that stalled her career, thanks to drugs and alcohol.

Two scenes really caught my attention. First, the interview with a reporter at the beach. She was knitting a sweater while being asked a number of reflective questions that seriously made me think, especially the advice part where all she answered was "love." Second, her final performance at the legendary Paris Olympia. One could clearly see the emotion and relevance of the song to Piaf's poignant life. I was teary-eyed during this part! Awwww!

La Vie en Rose

The ending? Hmmm. That would have to be my favorite part of the film. The flashbacks of her life while struggling against the idea of death itself was truly remarkable. The thing is that she was trying to recall certain events over the last few days but her mind was transmitting other images from her past (SPOILER: She had a daughter named Marcelle, I think, that died of meningitis). I like the shot where she was holding a frog as a little girl. Nicely done.

Overall, the whole movie was astounding and elegant; From the cinematography down to the make-up (they won an Academy in this category, too), everything was brilliantly made. Not to mention Cottilard's marvelous portrayal of Piaf, where she was clearly immersed in her role. There was passion in every single scene. She truly deserved that most coveted golden guy as a token for her superb performance. Kudos!

Marion Cotillard "Oh -- thank you so much. Olivier, what you did to me, Maestro Olivier Dahan, you rocked my life. You truly rocked my life. Thank you so much to Picturehouse for your passion, members of the Academy, thank you so, so much. And -- wow. Well, I'm speechless now. I -- I -- well, I -- thank you life, thank you love, and it is true, there is some angels in this city. Thank you so, so much."

Coffee, anyone?

On David Archuleta

He has the voice and the talent.

He has the face and the looks.

He has the charisma and the moves.

He has everything and he could be the next American Idol!

David Archuleta

His rendition of the John Lennon classic "Imagine" was simply amazing. I was even teary-eyed after his astounding performance. Randy said he's so hot. Paula was literally in tears and Simon said that he was way ahead of the other 19 contestants. Yipee! :)

God, please bless this boy who sings from his heart. Please let him be the next American Idol. Please!

EDSA 3...?!

I know, I know. The idea of an EDSA 3 currently lingers the Philippine atmosphere for the past few days due to the President's late confession last weekend of her knowledge about the tainted and anomalous National Broadband Deal with the Chinese company, ZTE. This last-minute attempt to regain the country's trust, however, enraged a lot of anti-GMA leaders and supporters, thereby asking her to get out of the palace or be impeached.

But, before anything else, let us first look back at the first and second EDSA people power that established the Philippines as a country who stands for democracy.

Of course, there is the original EDSA people power 1. Most of its proponents were clergymen and politicians who were sick and tired of the Ferdinand Marcos regime. I was about a month old then so I basically had no knowledge of the said event. :)

EDSA People Power 1

Then came EDSA 2 which ousted the former President Joseph Estrada from the Malacañang Palace. I was in high school back then and the said event gave me a clear definition of how a group of individuals with a common cause can move mountains, or in this case, a so-called "Plunderer" out of a palace.

EDSA People Power 2

EDSA 3? Hmmm. I don't know. There are a hundred-and-one things to consider before such an undertaking could be realized and mobilized. First, the church has yet to reveal a clear stand on the controversy at hand (I think they, the CBCP, will procure a stand some time this week). Their earlier statement about a "communal action"has been plaque with criticisms as an unclear stand about the said event. A number of reporters repeatedly asked the bishops about what the said action means and what it consists.

Then, there's the President's persistent stubbornness about staying in power till the end of her term come 2010. Come on! Where's her DELIKADESA?! She knew that the whole deal was anomalous right from the start yet she signed the damned thing just to save the China-Philippines international relations. Yes, she did save the international ties but, unfortunately, she just received a direct flight to fiery hell. No pits stops there. Sorry.

This is obviously the second time that President GMA betrayed the Filipino people. First, the "Hello Garci" scandal."Now the ZTE anomaly. What's next, Mrs. Arroyo? Millions of Pinoys scattered all over the 7,107 islands of this country are hungry, unemployed, and homeless while you and your fat family sit and sleep in millions of dollars worth of ill-earned government money. Why not try to eat and live in the shanty parts of this country just to get a better view of things?!

Anyways, if you ask me about my view on a possible EDSA 3, I'm still skeptical about it. Hmm. But, come to think of it, I'll probably join the picket lines if my alma matter, the University of Santo Tomas, would call forth its alumni to make a firm stand on VERITAS (truth). The UST community has been consistent in its unending quest for truth during times of national turmoil, although not as publicized as other top universities around the country. No harm meant there, sorry. Nonetheless, it is a no call, no show for me. Haha. :)

Chasing Pavements - Adele

I've made up my mind
Don't need to think it over
If I'm wrong I am right
Don't need to look no further
This ain't lust I know this is love

But if I tell the world
I'll never say enough
'Coz it was not said to you
And that's exactly what I need to do
If I end up with you

Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads no where,
Or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there.
Should I give up
Or should i just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere

I build myself up
And fly around in circles
Waiting as my heart drops
And my back begins to tingle
Finally could this be it

Or should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads no where,
Or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there.
Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere

Yeaaah ehh

Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads no where,
Or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place
Should I leave it there

Should I give up
Or should I just keep on chasing pavements
Should I just keep on chasing pavements

Ohhhh ohh

Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere
Or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there

Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere

I was looking for a relevant song that would clearly define my current emotional state and, luckily, I stumbled upon this excellent song by Adele entitled "Chasing Pavements." I'm in a cheesy mood right now because of an unknown dilemma and, unfortunately, I can't do anything to shake it off my head. ARGH!

Cheesy?

Is there a resident Psychiatrist in the house?

*Sigh.* Whatever happens, I'll try to keep myself busy with a thousand-and-one trivial duties just to delay this uncomfortable cheesy mood. Do wish me luck, please?

Unfit for the AFP

Yes, you read that one correctly. I am seriously unfit for the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Blah!

After 3 weeks of pain-staking and non-stop expedition to the Camp Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City for my Neuro-Psych exam, which I paid from my own pocket, the head of the said department told me this morning that my personality was "categorically" inappropriate for service. Blah!

She clearly pointed the following items:

  • Too sensitive

  • Dependent

  • Prone to Anxiety that may lead to work dysfunction

  • Over confident

  • Unrealistic and too much idealism, thereby losing sight of reality

  • Unpractical

  • Does not act naturally

  • Erratic personality results

  • Always makes it a point to impress others

What even made the whole ordeal unbearable was the fact that I wasn't given the chance to defend myself. She did not even give me the smallest opportunity to talk and say something that would justify my unique personality. She earnestly went on an endless rampage that seriously degraded my individuality. Grrr!

I have nothing against them, seriously. The armed forces have been doing their very best to serve and protect the country since way back when. Its just that I didn't expect that I'd get rejected because of the way I project myself to the people that I'm supposed to impress. Maybe it is because of the way I talk (I sometimes radiate the notion that I'm an American due to my accent, thanks to IELTS and TeleTech) or the way that I dress and carry myself in public (dress to impress, people).

Anyways, I can't do anything about it. I asked the Nursing Corps. Office about the neurotic situation and they told me that it is irreparable and final. Ouch! To think that after all that sweat and effort, I'm still unemployed. Blah!

Overall, the said experience is a profound wake-up call for me that I cannot please everyone with my US-ish accent. Also, I think that I need to define and reflect upon myself further just to be sure about how I launch myself to others. Of course, at the end of the day, I will call the shots. This is my life. No more and no less.

As the protesters outside the Camp would bluntly put it,

AFP

In English: AFP EXECUTIONERS!

Jumper

Jumper

"Take a deep breath." - David Rice, Jumper

And so I did.

I was bored and pissed yesterday afternoon so I decided to watch a decent film at a nearby cinema. Of course, I was on a very very tight budget being unemployed and dependent to my parents. Haha. :) Anyways, I opted to watch Jumper rather than My Bestfriend's Girlfriend (I'm not in the mood for cheesy stuff) , Juno (I watched the movie last month), The Spiderwick Chronicles (I'd rather read the series), and The Mist (huh?) thinking that it would appease my bored and wounded Ego (Do I even have one?). Unfortunately, it didn't.

Jumper, a film based on the 1992 science fiction novel of the same title by Steven Gould, talks about David Rice (Hayden Christensen) and his extraordinary ability to teleport or "jump" himself to any part of the globe in a blink of an eye leaving only a trail of sub-atomic dust. Being a quasi-outcast/loser in high school with a negligent father, David used his power to escape his former life and build a new one in New York. Unfortunately, a group of not-so-gifted yet intelligent individuals called Paladins, led by Roland Cox (Samuel L. Jackson), hunt jumpers around the globe using high-voltage cable wires. Their motives? Hmm. "Only God can use this power." Haha. As expected, there were some action encounters in various parts of the globe, not to mention a piece of cheesy-ish angle with Millie (Rachel Bilson), his childhood sweetheart, just to spice everything. Of course, the movie ended with the usual good-guy-gets-the-girl fashion with tint of maternal conflict resolution (SPOILER: David's mother is a Paladin).

The visual effects were tolerable but the scenery was definitely astounding. From the Colosseum of Rome, the busy streets of Tokyo, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, a traditional pub at Dublin, the Madison Square in New York, and the Big Ben in London. Talk about shooting locations! My favorite part would have to be the scene where Hayden was standing at the Big Ben tower holding a typical umbrella while wearing a stylish gray coat. Super nice! Plus the part where David and Griffin (Jamie Bell), another jumper, stole a Mercedes Benz via Jump sequence in Tokyo. Totally cool! :)

The only problem that I encountered during the course of the film was the fact that there was no clear and specific explanation on how Jumpers came to existence (DNA mutation, scientific experimentation, etc.) and why Paladins hunt them down (aside from the aforementioned premise). Also, the action sequence was so limited to paladins aiming/shooting electric wires/whips at an inadequate number of jumpers (2 or 3 only) and jumpers dodging them or giving basic jabs/punches. Come on! A decent punch-teleport-kick-teleport-kill succession would have enhanced the whole experience.

Overall, the film was good. It somehow delayed the rapid onset of my relentless boredom and took my mind off of things. Hayden Christensen has, to some extent, grown outside the Star Wars trilogy, although he still needs to polish his acting skills.

Hayden Christensen He is so amiable. :)

Aussies Apologize

Australian Aborigine

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd spoke in the Australian Parliament Wednesday about the "ill-treatment" of Australian Aborigines for the past decades saying "sorry for the pain, suffering, and hurt of these stolen generations."

His extraordinary and apologetic speech goes:

"Today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

We reflect on their past mistreatment.

We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.

The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.

We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.

We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.

For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.

To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.

And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.

We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.

For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.

We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians.

A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again.

A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.

A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed.

A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility.

A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia."

According to australianetwork.com, the Australian Human Rights Commission approximated that more than 50,000 aboriginal children from 1910 to 1970 had been taken away from their parents and were placed in church homes and orphanages in the white community believing that it is a form of protection. This resulted in loss of familial contact and heritage, received inadequate education, lived in inhospitable conditions, and habitually received cruelty.

AFP Nurse Corps. Requirements

After viewing my blog stats for the past few weeks, I suddenly realized that a few number of people who actually strayed here were seriously looking for some pertinent information regarding the Armed Forces of the Philippines Nurse Corps. With that in mind, I have finally decided that I have the responsibility to post the necessary documents and procedures for possible employment to the above mentioned government agency.

Initial Requirements (1 Photocopy of the following documents):
  • Resume with 2x2 picture
  • College Diploma
  • Transcript of Records and Related Learning Experience
  • Certificate of Board Rating and Passing

The following papers will first be brought to the Office of the Chief Nurse at the Heneral Valdez Building (or Building of the Surgeon General) at Camp Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City for initial evaluation.

If you, or any applicant, posses a board rating of 80% and above for the Philippine Nurse Licensure Exam, you will not be required to take a clinical examination involving basic nursing concepts. If otherwise, then you will take the said clinical assessment. After which, an interview will then commence just to gauge the candidate's ability of express themselves amongst superiors and their nursing competency.

Next, after passing the clinical interview, the candidate will undergo a Neuro-Psych. evaluation (tests, actually) at the station hospital, followed by a series of interviews just to ascertain a candidate's proficiency. Then, physical and dental examinations will proceed if the applicant is deemed capable of joining the Nurse Corps. Also, a list of other essential records will need to be submitted, along with the Neuro-Psych. evaluation and physical-dental exam report, to the office of the chief nurse once everything has been done smoothly.

Of course, you will spend a significant amount of money, time, and effort just to secure the desired job. Believe me, they are (the investments mentioned above) very substantial once taken into account.

Note: This is, of course, subject to changes as assigned by the aforementioned government agency. Any interested applicant should be prepared for unexpected circumstances that may occur within the said process. If anyone deems that the material I have shared is inappropriate, inaccurate, inconsistent and/or the like, feel free to correct the things that I have said or written.

Anyways, happy job hunting!

Coffee, anyone?

Sony Ericsson K850i Cyber-Shot

Other note-worthy features on this Cyber-shot handset include a front-facing camera for 3G video calls, FM radio with RDS, organizer functions, Track ID, Video/Photo/Music DJ, voice recorder, RSS feed reader, Web browser, Bluetooth stereo with A2DP and triband HSDPA connectivity.

Seriously, I will do everything in my mortal life to acquire this handset ASAP. Although I am currently using its predecessor, Sony Ericsson K800i Cyber-shot, and quite satisfied with its features, I would still want and/or need to upgrade my phone to the next higher level. Argh! :)

About Me (2 or 3 years ago)

About me? I am Juan Paulo Gloria Gultiano. Born on January 4, 1986 at exactly 12:00pm. My name means "God is Gracious". My parents love me for who I am. I'm their one and only son. The herald of the Gultiano lineage. My grandmother thinks I can be the president of the Philippines. My Aunt's think I'm a clown. My uncle's think I'm crazy. My cousins look up to me like I'm Jose Rizal.

My friends view me as a leader. My classmates think I'm a freak. But I'm not. A professor thinks I'm a horse. I'm a good listener. I listen to anyone who wants to talk to me. My Best friend helps me with almost anything. I want to become a Pediatrician. I love Reading. It makes me alive. It gives me the sense of well-being. I love meeting other people. I'm a people person. I love making friends. I'm very religious. I go to mass every Sunday at the Monastery of St. Clare. I always make it a point to read at least a novel a month. I play Ragnarok. It gives me a sense of responsibility. It gives me power; The power to change my path. My Roommate thinks I'm a pervert. My dorm mates think I'm a genius.

A former friend told me (for the first time in my entire life) that I'm interesting. That's quite intriguing. I think I'm lazy. I like 6cyclemind. I love Sugarfree. I adore Coldplay. Their songs inspire me a lot. I'm one big failure when it comes to love. They think it's just one big publicity stunt. But I think otherwise. I think I have Insomnia. I can dance but not that good. I can sing a note or so. No more. No less. I text a lot. I spend about P500.00 every month just to argue with a friend about love and friendship. I hate people who lie. I hate those people who think they know everything. I hate politics. I loath politicians. I despise smokers.

I love helping others with their love problems. They think I'm some kind of a "Love Doctor".

Why can't I find the answers to my own love life?

I don't know.

I really don't know...

Note: I wrote this self-description 2 or 3 years ago. It's sort of weird rereading it after all this years. Most, if not all, of these characteristics are still intact and functional. While others were, unfortunately, sucked into the abyss of nowhere. Nevertheless, taking a trip back into memory lane is, as always, a delightful endeavor. Haha. :)

JDV's Litany

JDV

"I am a sinner. All of us are sinners in this house!"

-Former House Speaker Jose De Venecia

Honestly, he should have been a priest, a preacher or something of that sort. From the way he spoke his privilege speech last night, he would've become an effective man for the church. :)

Seriously, this battle for the house speakership in the lower house of representatives is a stupid cat fight between power-hungry and mindless animals. Mindless in the sense that they (the congressmen) let themselves be influenced and controlled by 2 fat kids and their not-so-intelligent father from the palace beside the river. And to think that most, if not all, of them (the congressmen) are well-educated and hail from prominent families. How pathetic.

As Gabriela Party-List Representative Lisa Maza would put it:

Lisa Maza

"This is a well-funded Malacañang assault on the Congress!"

Kudos to you, Ma'am, for voting NO last night! Unlike most of your colleagues, you still managed to see reason amidst this absurd page in Philippine history.

Lesson to be learned? Power is never absolute, especially in the Philippines where all politicians are easily swayed by money. Pathetic indeed.

Poor, poor JDV. Want some coffee?

Nograles

Oh! By the way, look who's smiling now. :)

California Roll/Maki

Cali Maki

California roll or maki originated in Los Angeles, California during the early 1970s. Although its exact origin is still subject to numerous debates, it is believed that the California roll eased American taste buds to a more exotic variety of sushi from Japan. It contains avocado, imitation crab stick, cucumber, and rice in an inside-outside roll. Here in the Philippines, a slice of ripe mango is usually included just to add a twist in the mix.

Yummy!

Caren and I ate them for lunch during our "agency hunting" spree last week. I thought that it would be very exciting to try something new yet tasty just to break the monotony of the typical Filipino lunch.

Lunch, anyone? :)
